Arnold Wochenmark married Johanna Braunschweig on March 18, 1945. She had grown up in Efringen-Kirchen in Baden. Together with her family, she had already attempted to leave Germany in 1933, but did not succeed.

In 1938, she fled to France with her mother, grandmother and sister. After the Germans invaded France in 1942, Johanna was able to flee to her second sister in Basel, Switzerland. 

Her sister was married to the son of the master baker for whom Arnold Wochenmark worked.
