
The rest of the family stayed in Germany. Arnold was to complete his Abitur [high school education] and go to teacher training college before they planned to emigrate together. In 1934, Josef Wochenmark was transferred to Schwäbisch Gmünd. There, the anti-Jewish policies of the National Socialists were even more noticeable.
Arnold Marque later recalled:
„... We only associated with Jews, and you had to give up everything so slowly, you had to give up the radio, you had to give up the telephone. There was a public swimming pool, but you were no longer allowed to go there. It was very depressing. You no longer had any joy in life. But my parents and I stuck together.“
