When Arnold learned of an open apprenticeship position with his uncle in Switzerland through his brother, he decided to accept it against his parents' wishes.

He traveled to Basel in the summer of 1937 to begin his apprenticeship in a kosher bakery. During his three-year apprenticeship, he lived with his uncle. Six days a week, he now worked from 3 a.m. until 12 p.m.
