Emigration was the only way out of the situation for the Bernheim family. Since they had relatives in the USA, they made efforts to leave the country and cross the ocean. So they sold their house in Tübingen and had to agree to the buyer Baron Hans von Hauff, who heavily pushed down the price. They were also exploited in the household liquidation and their household goods, which could not be sent on to the USA due to the war, were auctioned off at the port of Hamburg.
They still received the bill from the moving company.
