Fredy confessed to his father that he wanted to study veterinary medicine in Munich. He didn't dare tell him that his real wish was to study human medicine. "After all, I was financially dependent. I could be bought."
After his Physikum [preliminary examinations], he received permission from the university to start studying human medicine as well. He met Cathy Quinchen. They fell in love, and when it turned out that she was Jewish, nothing stood in the way of marriage. The married couple moved to Karlsruhe, where Fredy Kahn received his license to practice as a specialist in general medicine in 1980.
His father lived to see him work as a doctor and proudly told other people about it. Harry Kahn died in 1978, and his wife followed him in 1980 of a "broken heart," as their son put it.
