In March 1939, the Baum family left Rexingen for Palestine. By night train from Horb via Stuttgart, Ulm, Munich, Rosenheim to Trieste, as this was still a permitted route.
Herbert remembered that in Rosenheim the train was checked by Gestapo officers. They allowed themselves a nasty joke when they demanded the Hitler salute from his five-year-old sister Senta.
"My sister did it. She raised her hand and said Heil Hitler. So the last check was over and we finally got to Trieste in Italy to the ship Galilea."
