Father Ludwig Baum, born in 1887, was a butcher by trade and owned his own store in the main shopping street of Alzey.

He had been a soldier in World War I and was decorated several times.

He was very athletic and a staunch opponent of the Nazis. When the Hitler Youth paraded through the streets singing songs hostile to Jews, he opposed them and beat them up.
