Herbert's parents lost more and more non-Jewish customers. Many who had enjoyed shopping with them before the Nazi era hardly dared to come anymore. SA guards posted themselves in front of the butcher's entrance. Herbert recalls:
"My father was allotted only the worst meat at the slaughterhouse and eventually nothing at all."
The parents decided to move in with the grandparents in Rexingen and join the emigration project of the Rexingen Jews to Palestine.
