Ilse Käthe Wälder was born in Rexingen on November 18, 1922, the youngest of three children.
Her parents were Zilly and Wilhelm Wälder, who was a cattle-dealer. Her sister Hella was ten years older than her, her brother Sally fourteen. He worked in his father's business and was to become a partner after his marriage and later the sole owner of the business.
