Throughout her life, Inge was accompanied by her doll Marlene. She became her loyal friend.
In Jebenhausen, Inge felt little anti-Semitism. She recounted that the non-Jewish children were friendly to her. They played together. Sometimes they paraded through the streets singing Nazi propaganda songs whose content they did not understand.
Jewish customs were practiced by the Auerbacher family only cautiously and in secret after the pogrom night of 1938.
Every day new restrictions were imposed, for example, the compulsory names Sara and Israel had to be registered in documents.
Some Christian families nevertheless upheld their friendships with the Auerbachers.
