Joel Eppstein was born Martin Eppstein in Hechingen on November 7, 1919. He was the youngest of the four children of Edmund Eppstein and Blondine Eppstein née Felsenthal. His sisters were the twins Gertrude and Helene, who were three years his senior, and Meta, who was more than 10 years older than him.
