Siegfried and Gertrude Bauer had saved up for a modest home in San Francisco.
The father never recovered from the time of persecution and their flight. He was intermittendly depressed, developed Parkinson's disease and finally Alzheimer's. He died in 1963. The mother lived alone until she moved to a nursing home, where she died in 1991. The couple was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Colma, California.
