In 1943, Manfred Bernheim and Chanah Walters from Liverpool were married. After the end of the war, the British government decided to take in Jewish children who had survived the Shoa. Manfred and Chanah Bernheim ran a home in the south of England that cared for 60 children between the ages of 13 and 17.
"We had to be mother, father, teacher, psychologist, friend and sometimes confidant, all at once and at all times - 24 hours a day. We dedicated ourselves to this task for two years .... and slowly gained the trust of our protégés. It was an experience that, more than any other in my life, left an indelible impression on how we thought, felt and acted."
The feature film "The Children of Windermere" depicts another home in the north of England where surviving children of the Shoah were cared for.
