The Bernheim family was a well-integrated and respected family in Hechingen. For generations, the ancestors had resided there and were connected to their Hohenzollern homeland.
Manfred's father fought as a soldier for the German Reich in the First World War. His brother Sigmund Bernheim went to war as a volunteer and was killed in 1916.
