Sally survived several forced labor camps as well as the concentration camps Stutthof near Danzig and Buchenwald near Weimar. In Buchenwald, as once before in a forced labor camp, he managed to get a job in the kitchen. This saved his life.
Finally, in April 1945, he was sent from Buchenwald to Theresienstadt ghetto. In May, he was liberated there by the Red Army and returned to Stuttgart.
