Out of all Rexingen Jews, only Sally Lemberger and Bertha Schwarz survived the deportation to Riga. They were housed in a community shelter in Stuttgart. From there, Sally drove to his home village to see what had happened to his Jewish neighbors and relatives.
"In every house - if you went up the main street - Jewish families had lived. They were gone. It was really unbelievable. I was lost."
Some time later, he returned once more, now with Bertha Schwarz. They met with the women of the Vögele family who had tried to help the persecuted Rexingen Jews during the Nazi era.
