In 1934, Herbert Kahn became Rexingen’s new Jewish teacher. For the Jewish children, their school became an important safe space against the backdrop of increasing discrimination and aggression. Sally later recalled conflicts between Jewish and non-Jewish children:
“Most of the older Rexingers did not change their behavior toward us. But it was different with the children." In 1938, he went to school together with his younger brother Siegwart. “It was my brother Siegwart who was the fighter. He had his share of wins, but got beat up too.”
