The Nazis had been in power in Germany since 1933. Despite this, the Jewish children in Rexingen still had their freedoms, because there still was a functioning Jewish community and a Jewish school. The picture is from about 1934.
All the children in this photograph are from Jewish families.
In the last row in the middle, Trude Schwarz can be seen. She is the girl with the glasses. To her right stands her friend Ilse Wälder, and between the two, somewhat obscured in second row, stands Sally Lemberger. Their story is told in our project as well.
