After his internment in Dachau, Robert Gideon wanted to leave Germany as soon as possible. Michael Bloch, however, felt connected to Germany as a German and thought the Nazis would not come for him.

Elsa Gideon did not want to leave her father behind, while Robert Gideon did not want to flee without his wife and children. Thus, a conflict arose between Werner's parents.

Many friends and relatives of the Gideon family from the surrounding Jewish communities had already fled Germany.
